C‑reactive protein is efficient and reliable early predictor of COVID‑19 associated mortality
New Nature Scientific Report is a retrospective cohort study comprised of a comprehensive analysis of the initial symptoms, comorbidities and laboratory evaluation of patients, diagnosed with COVID-19.
COVID-19 can be conspicuously phasic, with major deteriorations in some patients occurring ~7d post-symptom onset. Patients with comorbidities specifically hypertension and diabetes mellitus, are particularly susceptible to COVID-19 infection and are likely to develop more severe illness. Early prognosis of COVID-19 patients may aid in their specialized medical care reducing mortality. The study identified myoglobin and CRP as specific risk factors related to organ failure and mortality.
CRP is routinely used as a non-specific marker of inflammation. CRP does not normally elevate significantly in mild viral respiratory infections, however, significant increase of CRP has been reported in COVID-19 patients. Several studies have also associated elevated levels of myoglobin with COVID-19 severity.
The study concluded that the identified risk factors CRP and myoglobin should be specifically continuously screened for prognosis of COVID-19 patients in early stages.
